Updating the theme is easy, the following procedure shows you to do that quickly.
If you haven’t, download your theme again, this will give you the latest version of the theme. The change log on theme page will tell you what’s new and what’s changed.
Before you begin, it is strongly recommended to create a backup of your site, there are many free backup plugins, you can choose one you like.
Method 1 – Update via WordPress
1. Delete the old version of your theme from the admin panel Appearance > Themes
You will have to temporarily change the active theme before you can delete your theme, if your site is already live, it’s a good idea to install a maintenance plugin and enable the maintenance mode during updating.
Don’t worry, deleting the theme has nothing do with your data. Your contents and settings are kept in database of your host safely.
2. Upload and install the new version
Method 2 – Update via FTP
1. Connect to your host via FTP client, if you haven’t got one, pick FileZilla, which is fast, free and easy to use.
2. Upload the theme file (not the full package) to your wp-content/themes directory in your host, then unarchive it from the server side. When you are prompted if to overwrite old files, choose Yes (or All).
Alternatively, you can unarchive theme file locally, then upload the theme folder to “../wp-content/themes”, overwrite the existent theme folder as well.
